Unless you’ve actually seen the letters of the Hollywoodland sign for yourself, and even then only up close, it’s hard to get a realistic grip on the size of them. This photo gives us a better idea. I don’t know when it was taken, but from the poor state the “D” is in, my guess is the 1940s by which time the sign had been up for more than 20 years.

UPDATE: Mary Mallory says: “…this photo looks like it’s from the newsreel made in 1923 when the Sign was erected.”
