It doesn’t seem to matter how many photos I see of Los Angeles in the early part of the 20th century, it still blows my mind to think how empty the land was back then. With every square inch of land so intensely developed nowadays, it’s hard to imagine a scene like this. Todays’ photo is of an aerial view of La Brea Tar Pits, circa 1924. That’s Wilshire Blvd running along the top of the photo, with the pits visible in the upper left hand corner. We can see housing developments south of Wilshire, but everything else? Vast empty land…and my mind is blown all over again.
