I love any vintage photo of Hollywood, which features the Red Cars in Hollywood. This one features two Red Cars meeting at the corner Hollywood Blvd and Highland Ave. Those trees the photographer is standing under are out front of the Hollywood Hotel. On the right, the tall building is the Hotel Drake, formerly the Hotel Christie which was the first hotel in Hollywood to feature private bathrooms when it opened in 1922.
This photo is from 1959 and is from the other side of the intersection, looking west:
Did capture an image of a matchbook (online listing) for the “Hollywood Hotel Inn” which was apparently the new name for the Christie/Drake for a while. But the crest involves four letters whose meaning seems unexplained.
According to my notes the order of this hotel’s names was:
Glidden Hotel
Christie Hotel
In 1945, it became the Drake Hotel
Then later the Hollywood Inn
Sorry, the last one’s a tongue twister…reads on matchbook as “Hotel Hollywood Inn” rather than the way I gave you. Seems everyone has been shortening it to just inn and leaving off the hotel part. Beyond the matches, it seems impossible to find any “official” paper items on this final incarnation.
