Graf Zeppelin next to a Goodyear blimp at Mines Field (future LAX), in August 1929In 1929, the Graf Zeppelin completed a Hearst-sponsored circumnavigation of the world. On August 8th, it landed in Los Angeles at Mines Field (the future site of LAX), and was huge news. As we can see from this photo of it parked next to the Goodyear Blimp, it was also a huge airship. In my first book, “The Garden on Sunset,” there is a scene where one of my characters goes to the arrival of the Graf Zeppelin and glimpses someone who changes the course of her life.

In 1929, the 776-foot-long Graf Zeppelin docked at Mines Field as part of its circumnavigation of the globe.
