This is a cover of the Vine Street Brown Derby’s menu. We can see here that it featured some of the many caricatures drawn by Eddie Vitch of the famous people who dined regularly there. Shortly after Brown Derby opened on Valentine’s Day, 1929, young (and probably starving) Vitch offered to sketch caricatures of diners in exchange for a bowl of hot soup and a cup of coffee. It’s a good thing management said yes, because it became one of the things the Brown Derby became famous for. Those caricatures ended covering the walls of the entire restaurant.
