1897- First automobile in Los Angeles, built by J. Philip Erie, the driver, a resident of Los Angeles at the time. Los Angeles Mayor William H. Workman is in the rear seat, 1897 PINThe car culture of Los Angeles started with this jaunty vehicle. This is from 1897 and is the first automobile in Los Angeles. It was built by the guy who’s driving it, a Mr. J. Philip Erie. In the backseat is the then LA Mayor, William H. Workman. If only they knew what they started.
