It’s hard to believe that the Sunset Strip was ever this empty. This photo was taken at around the corner of Sunset and Sweetzer in 1930. The Sunset Tower Apartments (the tall Art Deco building on the left) would have just opened. It must have really stood out at the time—not much else was around! It’s now a hotel but back then was an upscale apartment block, which over time has counted among its residents Howard Hughes, John Wayne, Billie Burke, Marilyn Monroe, Errol Flynn, Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra, Paulette Goddard, and Bugsy Siegel.
