We’re all so familiar with the sight of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre that I suspect by this point we all take it for granted. Then I came across this photo. It was taken in 1927, the year that the theater opened (on May 27th, 1927, with deMille’s “King of Kings.”) and it helped me appreciate what a striking building it must have been when it first opened. And with those jalopies parked out front, it’s easier to see how it was more of a local theater that was yet to become the Hollywood icon it would evolve to be.
