This photo shows us the very first Academy Awards ceremony, which took place on May 16th, 1929 in the Blossom Room at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel with Academy president Douglas Fairbanks as the host. Tickets cost five bucks, 270 people attended, the presentation ceremony lasted all of fifteen minutes, and the winners had already been announced before the night. And, I suspect, nobody asked any woman there, “Who are you wearing?”
Great picture Martin! I recognized the MGM table (in front of the table on the left) with L.B., Norma & Irving Thalberg.
Howard (and wife Gale) Strickling were very good friends – really nice people, they owned a turkey ranch in the Valley and sent us a turkey every Christmas. I know his reputation was harsh, but I never saw that side of him. Happy Sunday & love, L

Howard really was at the center of all things Hollywood at that time, wasn’t he? Esp during the GWTW years.
Looks like a scene from The Shining (Where is Jack Nicholson)?
