Napkin from the Hollywood Plaza Hotel and It Cafe, circa late 1930s

Napkin from the Hollywood Plaza Hotel and It Cafe, circa late 1930sIsn’t it amazing how some things survive? I’d love to know how this one did. It’s a paper napkin from the Hollywood Plaza Hotel and It Café, which stood just south of the Hollywood and Vine corner. The hotel’s café changed names and management a number of times, but is most famously remembered as the It Café when, in 1937, Clara Bow and her husband Rex Bell took over what had been Cinnabar and before that the Russian Eagle Cafe & Gardens. They didn’t last there long – Clara became pregnant and took to her bed. Later the It Café was run by Phil Selznick (David O. Selznick’s uncle.)

Here is a timeline:

  • 1925 to 1928 – Klemtner’s Blue Plate Café
  • 1928 – 1931 – Pig “N Whistle Café
  • 1931 to 1936 – Russian Eagle Café
  • Dec 17, 1936 to Sept 1937 – Cinnabar
  • Sept 1937 – It Café (owned by Clara Bow for about a year, then changed management)
  • 1944 – Les Comiques
  • 1952 – Westerner Lounge-Grill
