Here we have an aerial shot of the Gilmore Field (1939 to 1957, home of the Hollywood Stars baseball team) and Gilmore Stadium (1934 to 1952) on what was obviously a clear day because we can see the Pacific on the horizon. All that empty land is now occupied by the CBS Television Center, Farmer’s Market, and the huge Park La Brea apartment complex. On the far left, we can see the May Company department store building, which opened in 1940, so I’d say this shot was taken circa 1940s.
You truly got me with your pic of Gilmore Field, home of the Hollywood Stars. Many of the best times of my life were spent there and in that complex which Mr. Gilmore built: Bob Cobb was majority owner of the Stars. We had box seats just behind the Stars
Many of my happiest times in CA were spent at Gilmore Field; Bob Cobb was majority owner of the Stars & we had box seats there from 1939-1957. Pan-Pacific, where I did a lot of my skating, was in the complex as well as the Farmer’s Market, where I did a lot of my eating. In addition there was Gilmore Stadium which is where I was (football game) when the announcer told us that the Japanese had just bombed Pearl Harbor. That visible line of trees is where the Gilmore family had their home. Bless you my dear friend.
