This lovely building is on the Paramount studio lot. It’s known as “The Courthouse” as it was (and maybe is) used as a courthouse for filming. It was also was the Writer’s Building in the Studio System era at one point. This photo was taken in 1937.
I asked a friend of mine who works there to show us how it looks now.
Martin, I LOVE these pictures! The first time I moved down to LA was specifically to utilize my secretarial skills to get me into the studios. However I didn’t know a soul so my only way to realize this was to sign up at a temp agency that specialized in industry employment – Paramount was my first assignment. I couldn’t believe I was finally walking through the very famous original gate that big stars had used in the Golden Age. Several other temp assignments at Paramount followed and depending on where I was working, I used all the other entrances and was very excited to walk through the old RKO door on Gower.
I’m sure I came across this beautiful white building as I explored every inch I could on bicycle during lunch hours and Saturdays. Wish I knew then that it was the Writer’s Building. The only one I knew was the 2 story Dreier building used in “Sunset Blvd.”
