Laurel Canyon Blvd emerging from the Hollywood Hills, 1923

Laurel Canyon Rd emerging from the Hollywood Hills, 1923This aerial photograph was taken in 1923 and shows us the where Laurel Canyon Rd emerges from the Hollywood hills into West Hollywood. Laurel Canyon isn’t the curving road in the middle of the shot, but the one trailing out of the hills on the right. Of particular interest (to me, at least) is that in the bottom left corner, we can ju-u-u-u-ust see a glimpse of Alla Nazimova’s home that in a few years’ time she’d turn into the Garden of Allah Hotel.

The road cutting across the hillside is actually Hollywood Boulevard. Most people don’t realize that once it hits the hills, Hollywood Boulevard winds its way through the canyons eventually terminates at a spot north of Sunset Plaza on the Strip.
