Tam O'Shanter Tam O' Shanter Inn restaurant, 2980 Los Felix Blvd, Los Angeles - March 1924This whimsical example of “Storybook Style” architecture is a restaurant called the Tam O’Shanter Inn. It opened in June 1922 by the founders of Van de Kamp’s Dutch Bakeries and is still around today, making it Los Angeles’ oldest restaurant that has remained in the same location under the same ownership and management. It is located in the Los Feliz area, just a few miles away from Walt Disney’s Hyperion Studio. Disney himself and his lead animators frequented the restaurant so often that it was commonly referred to as the “studio commissary.”

  1. I spent many happy hours at Tam’O Shanter – my late husband was from Glendale and the restaurant was close by. Hadn’t thought of it in many years; thank you for bringing a good memory back. Fondly.

You are definitely not alone Louella, I was born in Glendale and when I was a kid in the 1960s this was our family splurge restaurant after a fun day out and about. I’m so glad it’s still there and doing well. It’s such a refreshing change from the big chain restaurants. My mom used to copy their coleslaw with peanuts recipe for a light side dish for Thanksgiving or Xmas and she used Girard’s Champagne vinaigrette dressing. I still make it to this day and it’s perfect. Best wishes to you!
