Marquee of the Million Dollar Theater, 307 S. Broadway, downtown Los Angeles, just before it opened, 1917Before Sid Grauman built his famous Egyptian Theater (where the star-studded movie premiere was born) and his even more famous Chinese Theater farther down Hollywood Boulevard, he opened the Million Dollar Theater in 1917 at 307 S. Broadway in downtown L.A., and is where he kept his offices. From this photo, it’s hard to see the detail here, but it almost takes your breath away. You can see it for yourself – the theater is still there, and operates largely as a Spanish-language movie house.
