When Charlie Chaplin decided to build his own studio in 1917, he bought a lot at the corner of La Brea Ave and Sunset Blvd and spent two years turning it into a picturesque British village. Miraculously, it’s still there—it’s now the home to Jim Henson’s Muppets. But even more miraculously, in this photo from 1921 the studio and La Brea Ave are covered in snow. These days, we’re lucky to get a few drops of rain.
This is the house which originally stood on the lot, which belonged to R.S. McClellan, who also had a large grove of old orange trees on the property.
If memory serves, if you walk around the south corner of the property and look down, there is something Chas wrote that is still there. Been years, but I read it in a book and I remember seeing it quite a long time ago. Sorry, bad memory. But for the thrill seekers out there maybe they could fine tune it for me.
