The Academy Awards ceremony in the Biltmore Bowl, downtown Los Angeles, March 4th, 1937 This is the 1937 equivalent of the Oscar Selfie! This is a group shot of the Academy Awards held on March 4th, 1937 Academy Awards in the Biltmore Bowl at the Biltmore Hotel in downtown L.A. (the year “The Great Ziegfeld” won best picture for MGM.) Even though the Biltmore Bowl was a cavernous auditorium, the awards ceremony seems more intimate. Plus they’re having dinner, so everyone was probably a bit more drunk than they are nowadays. (PS – I can see Cecil B. DeMille and Henry Fonda in foreground.

These table tents aren’t from that night, but they’re interesting ephemera, nonetheless:

I don’t have a date on this Biltmore Bowl menu, but it gives us an idea of a typical menu:

Walt Disney is in the lower far right corner, and Sonia Henie is not far behind Mr. De Mille.
