This is probably one of my favorite recent finds. The year is 1928 and we’re on Highland Ave looking south as it curves around and flows down into Hollywood. That corner of the left is Franklin Ave. Nowadays, this corner is fairly unsightly (empty lot, mini mall, and parking lot) but back then it looks like it was a thoroughly nice neighborhood. In the distance, we can see the silhouettes of three buildings, all of which are still around: the First National Bank of Hollywood building (now empty), the Paramount Theater (now Disney’s El Capitan), and the Roosevelt Hotel (which is now, miraculously, still the Roosevelt Hotel!)
Everything looks so fresh and clean in that photo. Look at the manicured lawns and beautiful palm trees. I have been down that same area many times as I worked at the Hollywood Museum (Max Factor Building) and know it looks nothing like it did. We as Americans seem to be going down hill rapidly. I wish someone would create a time machine so I could see just how beautiful this city was. I would soak it up like a sponge.
