This beautiful 20-room home was built by MGM mogul Louis B. Mayer in 1936—apparently in just six weeks! It stood at 625 Palisades Beach Road in Santa Monica. At the time, that stretch of beach was very popular with the movie crowd. Mayer’s neighbors with their own weekend getaway homes included Harold Lloyd, Mae West, Darryl Zanuck, Samuel Goldwyn, Douglas Fairbanks, Irving Thalberg & Norma Shearer. It takes “have the neighbors over for a BBQ” to a whole new level, doesn’t it? But of course dominating the beach was the enormous William Randolph Hearst/Marion Davies mansion. In fact, that gargoyle plinth on the right was a gift from Hearst. You can read more information on this place on Hollywood Essays, written by Mayer’s grand-neice, Alicia Mayer: http://bit.ly/1Mg266E
