The 101 Hollywood Freeway from the Vermont Ave Bridge, September 1951

The 101 Hollywood Freeway from the Vermont Bridge, September 1951This shot of the Hollywood Freeway was taken from the Vermont Ave Bridge in September 1951. LA’s freeways are such a part of the cityscape now, it’s hard to imagine them not being there, and if they are, to be completely free of cars like this. According to Wikipedia, within a year of opening, the Hollywood freeway was carrying twice the number of cars per year that it was designed to handle. I can’t imagine what that number is now.
