This 1924 aerial shot shows us how the land surrounding the La Brea Tar Pits is only just starting to fill in. That’s Wilshire Blvd near the top (you can see the pool of bubbling tar) which means that’s 6th Street near the bottom. If this shot is anything to go by, it looks like most of the land north of 6th Street is up for grabs.
In 1947 while traveling by car up rte 66 heading to the east coast my family visited some tar pits that were puddle sized and made of tar that started to move slowly when my siblings and myself stood on them. I was six years old. Coukd these have been the La Brea tar pits before they were built up and before the city surrounding them was built up. I remember the area being a vast open space with no homes or businesses nearby.
Great photo and story. How are you? I am gradually recovering from the holidays. Love always.
