Hollywood Boulevard (Prospect Boulevard) near its intersection with Sunset Boulevard in 1904

Hollywood Boulevard (Prospect Boulevard) near its intersection with Sunset Boulevard in 1904In this shot we can see an adventurous two early adopters of this horseless carriage contraption as they chug along an unpaved section of Hollywood Boulevard near the Sunset Boulevard intersection. This was taken in 1904 so technically, Hollywood Boulevard was still called Prospect Boulevard. We can see they’re driving alongside streetcar tracks, which apparently everybody else is using leaving the entire street to our two intrepid motorists.

It appears that the vehicle these people are driving is a 1903 Grout “Drop Front” steamer with the front seat stowed. Here is a better picture:

  1. Oh Martin, I absolutely love this photograph. Is that a unicycle by the side of the road? Who could have possibly dreamed what was to come? Love to you and Bob on this Martin Luther King Day. Do you think, in his wildest dreams, Dr. King could have foreseen our amazing President Obama? Have a good day; I am enjoying the rain, but Blue (my cat) is not. Your forever friend.
