Academy Awards at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, March 7th, 1946

Academy Awards at Grauman's Chinese Theatre, March 7th, 1946On this, the day of the 2016 Academy Awards, I thought it appropriate to post this photo. It was taken on March 7th, 1946. Movie fans are sitting in bleachers on the south side of Hollywood Boulevard watching the celebs enter Grauman’s Chinese Theater. This was the year that Lost Weekend won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor in a Leading Role, and Best Screenplay. If these people were hoping to see Joan Crawford, they were disappointed. She was so freaked out at the thought of losing that she pretended to be ill—and then won the Oscar for Mildred Pierce.

  1. Joan was fully made up & ready to receive the press just in case she won. The saddest story I heard was much later in life when she was living in NY and she was taking care of former husband Franchot Tone who was near death.
I still think Gloria Swanson should have won for “Sunset Blvd.”

I sure don’t go to bed fully made up and dressed in my finest lingerie. Of course, in my house, it’s not Oscar night with reporters waiting outside my bedroom door to be ushered inside should I win Best Actress haha

    Here’s Joan and her Oscar:

I agree, Louella. Gloria Swanson WAS Norma Desmond and without a doubt should have been handed the Oscar! However I wonder if Bette Davis and Gloria cancelled each other out? Just the same, one of many voting errors in my humble opinion the Academy has made over the years.
