View over Hollywood Boulevard and Grauman's Chinese Theatre, Hollywood, circa 1930These days, we’re used to the stretch of Hollywood Boulevard from Grauman’s Chinese Theatre to the Highland Ave corner being one huge development, it can be easy to forget it was once two blocks, and Orchid Ave extended all the way through to the boulevard. I love that in this circa 1930 photo you can see the empty parking lot next to Grauman’s (!) and of course the grand old lady, the Hollywood Hotel.

Below are sections of a map of Hollywood Blvd, recreated from a 1930 map, showing individual stores. You can see the entire map HERE.

Love this post! Enlarged the map and interesting (craning my head sideways) reading names on each building. Wish it still looked like this and the grand ole gal Hollywood Hotel was still there, lovingly restored in all her glory.

Here’s a nice shot showing the Montmartre. Wish it was a larger pic though.

That source map shows the Owl Rexall at Vine was another Liggett’s Drug location in this early period. There’s another on the north side towards Ivar on a corner..the one that usually is found in photos. Liggett was big into the fountain/grill additions to store space, so this might explain the origins of the long counter in the Vine St. operation. The map also documents the presence (seen in some photos) of the Southern Pacific ticket agency down by the Banko de Italy (BofA) at Highland next to the theater.
