Premiere of Warner Bros’ “All This and Heaven Too” at Carthay Circle Theatre, July 1940

Premiere of Warner Bros' "All This and Heaven Too" at Carthay Circle Theatre, July 1940I think we’ve all seen plenty of shots taken at Hollywood movie premieres, but rarely have I seen one with such dramatic lighting. This was taken at the Carthay Circle Theatre for the premiere of “All This And Heaven Too” in July 1940. Look at those long shadows and shafts of light. I’m guessing the photographer was standing at the top of the Carthay Circle’s tower.

  1. The Carthay Circle was my very favorite place to watch a film. I still can’t believe the idiots tore it down. Sob, sob. Love always, L

Sad enough for someone like me who only has photos to go by, but especially heartbreaking for those who have been to the Carthay in person, such as you, Louella. Left now with only memories.

Isn’t this an especially captivating shot from the ’30s:

    Thanks to you both!

  3. Jean, that’s one of my favorite shots of old Hollywood!
