Biltmore Coffee Shop at Fifth and Grand, downtown Los Angeles, 1939

Biltmore Coffee Shop at Fifth and Grand, downtown Los Angeles, 1939This is the coffee shop attached to the Biltmore Hotel, at the corner of 5th and Grand in downtown Los Angeles, opposite Pershing Square. This photo is circa 1939. Within a couple of years, the war would be on and this coffee shop would be serving thousands of meals a day. (Note the sign: “Breakfast from 25c.” This photo made me realize we don’t see revolving doors anymore—I kind of miss them.

  1. Now that you mention it, I miss the revolving doors too. Can’t recall last time I went through one of them. What are your plans for the holiday? I’m going to knit, watch tv and/or listen to music – sounds great to me! Love always, Lou.
