Hollywood robot maker Harry Bates from “The Day the Earth Stood Still” (1951)I don’t know about you, but I prefer my robots clunky and chunky and looking as though they weren’t likely to give Fred Astaire anything to worry about. I assume this is Harry Bates building one of my favorite robots, from “The Day the Earth Stood Still” (1951).

    Next time you’re on La Brea near Edgewood (one block south of Olympic) you can see “GORT” from the 1951 version of the movie standing in the window of Grey Goose Picture Framing (1170 S. La Brea)
