Until I came across this charming photo, I’d never even heard of the Western Pacific Railroad. Perhaps that’s because it went to San Francisco rather than Los Angeles. According to Wikipedia, it was formed in 1903 as an attempt to break the near-monopoly of the Southern Pacific. This is a shot of their observation car, which seems like a pretty decent way to watch the passing scenery from Denver, along the Rio Grande and into Salt Lake City, then across Nevada, and into California.
