It’s not often we can look at a photo of Los Angeles circa 1936 and see a couple of buildings that are still around, especially in downtown L.A. Here we are looking north up Figueroa St with the Figueroa Hotel on our left. Amazingly, that hotel is still with us (even though I’m not a huge fan of their recent makeover). And on the far right, we can just see a building with an arch and a Juliet balcony. It’s still there but currently empty, which is a shame because it’s a lovely building. Interesting, there are no trees in this photo, but nowadays, the shade trees along Figueroa are plentiful.
The same view in 2015:
A better (2015) view of Variety Arts building across street – lovely, isn’t it?
