The Shatto house, 1213 Valencia at Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, late 1890s

The Shatto house, 1213 Valencia at Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, late 1890sI know the upkeep must have been onerous and the dusting never-ending, but what a shame we no longer have many houses like this one. This was known as the Shatto house after George Shatto, who made a fortune in mining, then bought Catalina Island in 1887, then built this house in 1890, then lost his investment, and then died in a railroad accident in 1893. One heck of a life by an measure, but he did leave behind this magnificent home, which stood west of what is now MacArthur Park at Wilshire and Orange.

** UPDATE/CORRECTION (25FEB2021) ** The mansion was located on Orange Street (today’s Wilshire Blvd.) and Lucas Avenue, on the NW corner, not Valencia. [As evidenced below on the 1900 Sanborn Fire Insurance Map.] This is the site of the original extant building of Good Samaritan Hospital.

I love zooming in to see details of everything. The architecture, landscape, growth of trees if it’s a before & after photo. My question is about the rock wall fence that borders the old mansion. I google earthed the address of Wilshire & Lucas & noticed there’s a rock wall fence possibly where the old mansion was, actually going up hill like the old photo shows. Would it be possible to find out if that is part of the original mansion rock wall fence??
