What I love about this shot of the interior of the Vine Street Brown Derby from Life magazine is that it’s completely unstaged. It shows the hubbub of waiters bustling around the restaurant, tending to well-dressed patrons huddled in booth, while Eddie Vitch’s caricatures fill every square inch of the walls. I don’t think I’d ever noticed those chandeliers before. They’re really quite something, aren’t they?
My home away from home – the Derby on Vine St. What wonderful memories! The last time I was was there was with Jerry and son Mark. We were going so see Rex Harrison live at the Pantages in “My Fair Lady” after dinner & I bought several of Bob Cobb’s cook books for my family. A great evening! Would you and Bob like to have a copy of the Brown Derby Cookbook? Love always, Lou
I never had the opportunity to go to any Brown Derby, but on a couple of LA visits I went swing dancing at the Los Feliz “Derby” club that had taken this space over for some years, closing in 2012, and had kept some of the interior intact. It was featured in the movie “Swingers.”
