Sculptor Howard Ball tows his life-size mammoth to the La Brea tar pits in Los Angeles, January 1967The sight of the mammoth standing at the edge of the La Brea tar pits on Wilshire Blvd is a must-drive-by for tourists. But imagine what it was like for the locals driving along Wilshire in January 1967 who came upon the sight of sculptor Howard Ball towing his life-size mammoth to the pits using only his Volkswagen. The previous time a mammoth took Wilshire was probably 5000 years before!

This picture was reprinted in a news paper about 5yrs ago. I have a framed news print. I am Howard Ball’s 1st granddaughter. He had a sculptor of figurines business. His work was beautifully detailed.
