A view from inside MGM’s original gate on Washington Blvd, Culver City, 1938

A view from inside MGM's original gate on Washington Blvd, Culver CityHere’s something that few of us mere mortals had the chance to see: the view from inside MGM’s original gate looking out across Washington Boulevard in Culver City. I read somewhere that the bridge overhead connected Mayer’s and Thalberg’s offices to the screening room. That would have been before the Thalberg Building was constructed in 1938, the same year this photo was taken. I can’t help but wonder what movies were being filmed that day.

Time travel machine please! And you can drop me right off here inside the MGM gate.

Wonder what “Ryan’s” was across the street?

    Thanks, Martin.

I was co-starring with Elvis Presley at MGM in 1968 when they closed the original gate on Washington Blvd. I remember saying to myself “this is an historical day”, but alas I don’t remember the exact day. Can you please supply me with this information?

I’m 82 now and treasure the many tv shows I made at that dear old studio.
It and Paramount remain my favorites.

Thank you for your attention to this.

    • I’m sorry, Marlyn, but I don’t know the exact date. I googled it, but nothing came up. Perhaps someone reading this will know the answer. There is a Facebook group called “MGM: The Studio, The Stars, The Directors and More” where you could post a question and someone might know the answer. I looked you up on IMDB and there you were with Elvis!
