In this 1929 photo of Wilshire Blvd, we can see the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, which at this time would have only been open a year. It’s facing Rodeo Drive whose eastern corner is a vacant lot (!) western corner would, in 1931, become the Beverly Hills location of the Brown Derby restaurant.
Hard to imagine at one time Beverly Hills ever looked like this – beyond the hotel – as far as the eye can see – it’s just low buildings and open land and foliage!
Here’s a 1930 postcard view looking southwest with the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on the east side of N. Beverly Drive and the Brown Derby sign on the far right.
