Grauman's Chinese Theatre, Hollywood Blvd during the run of “Saratoga” and “Born Reckless” - July 1937Who doesn’t love a good nighttime shot of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre? I do, especially when it was taken during the run of a Gable-Harlow picture, in this case, “Saratoga” in July 1937. This was Jean Harlow’s last picture – she died during the making of it and her remaining scenes had to be filmed using her stand-in.

Bittersweet for me seeing this – Harlow’s last film. She died on June 7th and it was a miracle – given her health – she was able to complete as much as she did. The few scenes she didn’t were voice dubbed and a body double (Mary Dees) was used with obvious-it-really-wasn’t-Harlow shots like big hats that obscured her face, holding up binoculars at the race track and backside shots. This is her highest-grossing film, most likely due to morbid curiosity, but I find it difficult to watch.

Here’s an article on Mary Dees – do you think she looks enough like Harlow? My opinion – there’s only one Harlow ever!

Thanks, Martin, for posting a rare pic I’ve never seen before!
