This 1954 view along Wilshire Blvd looking east towards La Brea Ave. That’s the E. Clem Wilson building at La Brea and Wilshire, which was built in 1929 and is still standing. What I like about this shot is the “very 1950s” feel of it: the shape of the cars on Wilshire; the way that female pedestrian is dressed; the vertical sign for Kress (a popular chain of five-and-dime stores) and opposite the billboard for White King soap. (Do they still make White King soap?)
Carnation (on the left hand side) had an ice cream shop at 5075 Wilshire Boulevard:
Love these slice-of-life shots. My eye went right to the Carnation building – here’s a beautiful pic from 1949 with palm trees etched against the stark white building.
Carnation had a great ice cream parlor. My family used to take us there. It was especially nice to go after visiting the La Brea Tar Pits and the museum. Also, that was the Vic Tanny gym which became Bally Health Center after it closed in the 70’s. This picture is full of old memories for me.
