It’s rare that I can present a photograph of a place that is not only still around today, but even better than it was back in 1936, which this shot was taken. Clifton’s Cafeteria quickly became a Los Angeles fixture when it opened its doors at 648 S. Broadway in downtown L.A. in 1931, just was the Depression was really tightening its grip. The cafeteria’s “Pay What You Wish” policy ensured that people didn’t go hungry but retained their dignity if all they could pay was one penny. Fast forward to 2016 when Clifton’s underwent a huge renovation and is now as popular as ever. (But without the “Pay What You Wish” policy!)
