"Eat In Your Car" drive-in restaurant, Los Angeles, March 1949This photo was taken in March of 1949 when the concept of eating in your car was so new that they had to advertise that it was now an option. Of course, it was easier to do back when cars were so roomy like the ones pictured here. It’s a little harder to stuff your piehole with a double cheeseburger, jumbo fries and chocolate thick shake in one of those Fiat 500s.

The name on the left is McELDOWNEY and belongs to McEldowney’s Florist, which was adjacent the diner. It was owned by Kenneth McEldowney who later became a movie producer. He hired Jean Renoir to direct the first color film shot in India, The River (1951)
