View of Highland Avenue looking north from Hawthorne Ave, Hollywood, January 1935

View of Highland Avenue looking north from Hawthorne Ave, Hollywood, January 1935Back in the days when streetcars ran along Highland Ave through Hollywood, this was the view (in January 1935) as you rode northward toward Hollywood Boulevard. My guess is that the photographer was standing near the Hawthorne Ave intersection. I love the Currie’s Ice Cream store with its huge four-sided ice-cream cone on the roof. They called it the “mile high cone” but I’ve never been sure why. Does anybody remember?

Gayle says: As a matter of fact, I do remember! I went with Dad to Currie’s in Glendale every Saturday. The Currie’s metal ice cream scoop was shaped as flat. This scooped the ice cream into a flat configuration. Three scoops (oh, how I remember!) were placed on the cone in a tee-pee shape, making is taller than most other ice cream cones.

Mile High Ice Cream Cone was scooped in such a way to form a spear-like shape that managed to stay at a perfect 6″ height.
