Brown Derby restaurant, Vine Street, Hollywood in color, circa 1940s

Brown Derby restaurant, Vine Street, Hollywood in colorWithout a motorcar in the frame to help us date this photo, it hard/impossible to date this photo of the Brown Derby restaurant on Vine Street in Hollywood, but that’s okay. To me, this place was timeless and in my mind, it always looked like that and always will.

Susan says: “1940s, probably. The Eddie Cantor Gift Shop is been replaced by The Hollywood Gift Shop, with no separate liquor store next to the Derby awning on the left of the photo. And The Bamboo Room is still there. It was renamed The Record Room in the early 50s, and they painted the outside brown in the early 50s, not too long after the coffee shop went into the area where the Hollywood Shop was located. It was painted white again by the later half of the 50s.”

I agree with you, my dear friend. The last time I was there was with Jerry, Diana & Mark. We then went to the Pantages Theatre to watch Rex Harrison (live) in “My Fair Lady). Also, at the Derby, there was a reprint of Bob Cobb’s fabulous Derby Cookbook and I bought copies for each of my kids, plus a couple more. Would you and Bob like a copy? It would give me great pleasure to send you one (available at Amazon). Love always, L&M.
