Ambassador Auditorium at the Ambassador Hotel, Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles

Ambassador Auditorium at the Ambassador Hotel, Wilshire Blvd, Los AngelesWait! What? The Ambassador Hotel on Wilshire Blvd had the Ambassador Auditorium out the back? Like, a big one? Where they broadcast radio shows? And this is the first I’ve heard of it? I knew there was a theater in the Ambassador and that it opened in 1921, but I thought that was inside the hotel. These photos show that it was what looks to be a separate building.

I can’t imagine it would have been too easy dancing on lawn like that, but that’s the Ambassador Auditorium on the left.

  1. The National Radio Show was a yearly event in June and later in September, for one week. It was an event to let radio manufacturers show off their new radio and related products. The event took place from 1922-1930 at the Ambassador Auditorium. Los Angeles radio stations also had booths to promote their station and their artists and announcers. Stations took turns doing remote broadcasts from the radio show each day for 7 or 8 days. I’m not sure when this event ended. The L.A. newspapers ran stories and pictures on the radio show each year it took place. The event was designed to bring together radio manufacturers, distributors, broadcasters and radio listeners/the public. The Radio Trades Association of Southern California were in charge of the radio show each year.
