Van Nuys, California, 1910

Van Nuys, California, 1910Given the endless oceans of urban sprawl that is now the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles, it’s hard to imagine that it ever looked like this. Here we have a photo of Van Nuys taken in 1910 just as the first roads were going down. I’m not entirely sure, but my guess is that this is either Van Nuys Boulevard or Sepulveda Boulevard being built—the future site of many a 1950s and 60s Saturday weekend cruising.

My aunt had a 25 acre ranch there (1937-42) where we spent great week-ends. An amazing place. She sold it all to John Scott Trotter in 1942 for some absurd price – $40,000 comes to mind. A business woman she was not. It was called Marsons Farm & please let me know if you find any info about it. Love, L&M
    (It was actually in Northridge)

Lower end of (central part) of Sherman Way (aka Van Nuys Blvd.) looking north across the Southern Pacific Railroad. The station sits on the right edge. Pacific Electric will come in from behind the camera running on an east-west parallel to the SP on the portion of Sherman that became Chandler. The two lines separate with SP running on a northwest tangent before resuming the east-west alignment. PE will round a curve from Chandler to Van Nuys at Circle Drive, turning north on single track before reaching the downton area where double track will be built. Beyond that, the line will split with the Sherman Way line heading west again and the San Fernando line running up on North Van Nuys Blvd.. The old Whitley Estate is over on the left of this view, up the road, where the mansion will face to the east looking out to Van Nuys Blvd.. A recognizable hotel will be built on the corner north of it. The dividing line was known as 6th Street in those days.
