Hody’s was a mini chain of coffee shops around Los Angeles (at one time there were eight). From 1955 to 1969 they occupied the northwest corner of Hollywood and Vine. But this one is my favorite. It was at the corner of 7th Street and Pacific Coast Highway in Long Beach. This photo was taken in 1955, which probably explains the very “Happy Days” feeling of it all. I can almost see the Cunninghams walk in!
Hody’s Coffee Shop and Drive-In was situated on the triangular block bounded by PCH, Anaheim St., and Clark Ave. in Long Beach. We went there once awhile in the mid-to-late 50’s for the drive-in service, with waitresses on skates. I was born in L.B. in ’47; Dad was born in L.B. in ’27. It’s easy to confuse those two PCH intersections, though the one at 7th St./Bellflower Blvd. is arguably busier – though it didn’t have Hody’s.
