Sunset Boulevard and Crescent Drive, Beverly Hills, California, 1911

Sunset Boulevard and Crescent Drive, Beverly Hills, California, 1911When I saw the caption for this photo – Sunset Boulevard and Crescent Drive, Beverly Hills, California, 1911 – I thought, “Wait, isn’t that where the Beverly Hills Hotel is?” And it is. In fact, it’s quite a busy three-way intersection with Beverly Dr. as well, and is where the Beverly Hills Hotel stands, as well as the Will Rogers Memorial Park. But back in 1911 there wasn’t much of anything (the hotel didn’t open until 1912) but a dirt road, a trio of lonely palm trees, and a promise of glory and glamour.

This is a great picture and your caption analysis is great. But what would help us more information than just the corner. What direction does the camera face? What street is the car on? Do we even know? Since there are no mountains in the background, presumably it isn’t looking north. What do you think? Thanks!

Shadows of car lay to right side, so that’s likely on the north where the hotel was built. With that, car would be facing westward toward final destination at Pacific shoreline. Great curve ahead…but such are the trademarks of Sunset, a real driver’s road when the traffic was light.

Regarding your comment about vintage cars. When I was a young ensign student at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California 1955-1956, I would come down to Los Angeles on weekends to search sites of old Hollywood. Once I saw an elderly woman with red henna hair driving a red, vintage two door roadster down Hollywood Boulevard constantly blowing her horn at fellow drivers and lurching along. She obviously was frustrated by the heavy traffic in contrast to her earlier days.

The Auto is much later than 1911 .. I would guesstimate mid 1920s .. great photo and great collection of photos ..
