Windward Avenue, Venice, California, 1914

Windward Avenue, Venice, 1914 (Turkish baths)This photo of Windward Avenue, Venice, California, was taken in 1914, and gives us a glimpse into what Venice looked like when it was newly opened (“Venice of America” opened on July 4th, 1905) and still close to Abbot Kinney’s utopian vision. Very little of what we see in this photo is left today, but it sure must have been something, especially to Angelenos used to a more Victorian approach to architecture. There is also a sign for Turkish baths. I’d love to have experienced that.

Katie Mooring Porter spent an extended time in Venice, Santa Monica in 1920. She rented an apartment on Rose Avenue near the beach. My parents purchased our house in Newbern, Dyer County, Tennessee at 208 North Monroe Street from her estate in Oct 1936 when I had just turned three years old. Katie Porter had passed away in March 1928 in the Baptist Hospital after being admitted November 1927. I have always been fascinated by this lady who was the only child of wealthy landowner and planter in Lake County, Tennessee, Wyatt Mooring. When Wyatt Mooring died in 1977, he owned in escess of 1,700 acres of rich Lake County farm land and founded the town of Mooring which no longer exists.

Hi Martin: I have a Delorean, perhaps we could go back in time to visit old Venice.

Our first house bought on the VA was on Warren Avenue in Venice. My great Aunt lived right off Rose Ave. She had a big monkey tree in the back yard. Venice was a wonderful city to spend my early years. I went to Lincoln Elementary on Lincoln Blvd. We took the Red Car to downtown and there was a kiddy land where we celebrated our birthdays and one year Hopalong Cassidy came to meet and greet. I have a picture of him holding me in my cowboy outfit replete with toy guns. Later I lived in Marina Del Rey and loved driving to work over the canals as the sun was coming up.
