American Airlines DC-3 fuselage towed down Wilshire Blvd past a Union Pacific billboard at Western Ave, Los Angeles, March 1937

American Airlines DC-3 fuselage towed down Wilshire Blvd past a Union Pacific billboard, March 1937In this photo we’re seeing an American Airlines DC-3 fuselage being towed down Wilshire Blvd past a billboard advertising the Union Pacific’s Streamliner service to Chicago. I don’t know if it was intentional, but I love the juxtaposition of the new (air travel) overtaking the old (train travel.) This photo was taken in March 1937 when train travel was reaching its peak. LA’s Union Station would open two years later but after the war, air travel would quickly become the preferred mode of long-distance travel.
