In this atmospheric shot, we’re looking west along the Sunset Strip from the roof of the Sunset Tower in 1957. I love the contrast between the intensity of the light along the Strip and the black shadows of the Hollywood hills hiding god-only-knows what sin and mischief. I’m surprised that lot across the street was still empty by the late 1950s. In 1963, the Gene Autry Hotel would open. In the 70s it would evolve into the legendary Hyatt on Sunset where touring rock bands often stayed (and commit their own brand of sin and mischief.)
