French village built at RKO’s Encino Ranch around 1939 for the studio’s version of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” – circa 1954
It’s amazing what movie studios will construct for a movie. This is the French village built at RKO’s Encino Ranch around 1939 for “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.” This photo was taken 15 years later in 1954 and it still looks like it’s in pretty good—albeit appropriately weathered—condition. 1954 is the year that RKO sold the ranch. All the back lot sets (this was just one) were destroyed to make way for housing. The street that roughly make up the borders of the former ranch are Louise, Balboa, Burbank & Oxnard.

Both beautiful and painful. Thanks and love. L&M.
