Aerial view of the northern end of Vine Street, Hollywood and beyond, circa early 1940sNowadays, the northern end of Vine Street in Hollywood is largely offices and parking lots. But in this aerial view circa early 1940s, we can see that the neighborhood was once largely residential, with large and lovely homes and scattered with trees. It’s also nice to see the area before it was bisected by the Hollywood Freeway. And in those pre-smog days, we can clearly see Mt. Lee and the Hollywoodland sign.

This photo gives you an idea of what the area looks like now. Pretty much the only building still there is the one in the upper left. Today is the home of a performing arts college called AMDA:

  1. The curved road from Vine to Franklin was where Harold Lloyd filmed trolley car stunts during Girl Shy (1924). https://silentlocations.wordpress.com/2012/03/19/how-harold-lloyd-filmed-the-girl-shy-trolley-stunts/

Further at back, up Argyle, stood the former Castle Sans Souci and Castle Glengarry.
