Max Factor building, Highland Ave, Hollywood, circa 1938

Max Factor building, Highland Ave, Hollywood, circa 1938In 1928, Makeup maestro Max Factor moved his company from downtown Los Angeles to 1666 N Highland Ave just south Hollywood Boulevard and within a lipstick’s throw from the Hollywood Hotel. In 1935, he opened the Max Factor Hollywood Makeup Studio and so by the time this photo was taken (which I suspect may have been taken from a film) circa 1938, Max had established himself as one of Hollywood’s premier makeup specialists. Nearly 80 years later, this block looks pretty much the same, which is a rare statement in LA!

This, in turn, led to a funny gag on the Jack Benny show wherein Rochester was driving Jack past Max Factor’s shop, and there’s a whooshing sound as Max apparently repossesses Jack’s toupee… 😀
